How H-2A taxes actually work

H-2A workers are exempt from some taxes, but not all. Federal income tax still applies: it just doesn't come out of your paycheck. It gets settled once a year, when you file.

How much is owed depends on your days in the United States. Too few days, and you'll be taxed from the first dollar. Cross the line, and most of what you earn is protected: you may owe little or nothing. You might even qualify for tax credits. That's money paid to you, and filing is the only way to claim it.

Past seasons count too. Some of your days from the last two seasons add to your total. If you didn't cross the line last season, coming back may put you over it.Las temporadas pasadas también cuentan. Algunos de tus días de las últimas dos temporadas se suman a tu total. Si no cruzaste el límite la temporada pasada, volver puede ponerte encima.

Why filing is important

Your season in the U.S. isn't fully over until your return is filed. Nothing was collected from your pay along the way, so everything gets worked out in one place, once a year.

That's not a problem; it's just how farm-visa pay works. But it does mean the return matters more for you than for most workers. There's no employer sending in payments under your name all season, and nobody mails you a finished number.

Filing is how you settle the year and know exactly where you stand with the U.S. government. Owe a little, owe nothing, or have money coming back: you only find out by filing.

It's required
Americans file. Visa workers file. Taxes are part of working in the U.S. No withholdings just means you settle up when you file.
It can pay you
Withheld tax and credits only come back through a return. Nobody sends that money to you on their own.
It keeps doors open
Coming back, extending, applying for permanent residency: a clean tax record is an important part of what gets looked at.

Questions people askPreguntas frecuentes

Yes! No withholding does not mean no tax, it means the whole amount is settled when you file. Filing is also how you find out you may owe nothing at all.
Most returns are filed electronically; the first year you cross from nonresident to resident, the year you first pass the days test, is a “dual status” year that the IRS only accepts on paper, from anyone. We prepare it ready to sign, and you mail it.
It depends on what you earned, what was withheld, and how many days you were in the U.S. Many workers owe less than they fear, and some are owed money instead.
Yes. Everything happens on WhatsApp, so where you are does not change what we can do.
Message us anyway. Older seasons can usually still be filed, and it is much better to deal with them than to leave them sitting.
